Our Start
The Burbank Unified School District’s Student Mental Health Board was founded in April of 2019 by Ariana Kretz in response to the tragic loss of three students to suicide on campus the previous school year. As the stigma around mental health and high rates of stress, anxiety, and depression of students has persisted, the Board has taken upon itself to increase communication between students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
Our Mission
This board serves to amplify the voices of students across Burbank campuses. Our goal is to help advise and implement new mental health programs and resources for our students to ensure that each student receives accessible, quality mental health care. We work to actively improve the well being of our students and alleviate the effects stress, anxiety, and depression have on our students throughout the year. While we have many long term goals, some of them are listed below:
- To streamline communication between students, school board members, FSA, and administrators.
- To eliminate the stigmatization of mental health on campus.
- To improve the quality of life of BUSD students by limiting stress, anxiety, depression, etc. and creating systems of support on campus.
- To serve as a safe space for any and all members of the public to voice their concerns about BUSD mental health resources.
- To diversify the types of mental health care available on campus.
- To create a climate at BUSD schools in which mental health is no longer viewed as a sign of weakness, but as a sign of strength.
