3/30/2020 0 Comments Burbank City Council MeetingOn February 20th, board members Alina Padilla, Cadence Baker, Vice-Chair Daria Clark, and Chair Ariana Kretz spoke to the Burbank School Board of Education about an attendance policy that limits student's privacy in the CARE Centers on the Burroughs and Burbank campus. While in the past, when students would miss class because of attending the CARE Centers, their attendance record was marked "O" for Office. Now, it is marked "K," for CARE Center. It is important to keep accurate attendance records of students, however, this policy allows parents to know when their student was in the CARE Center, which decreases the student anonymity the CARE Centers pride themselves on. In many cases, students have stopped attending the CARE Centers for this reason. There has yet to be a response from the district, but our students will continue to protect student anonymity until this is rectified.

In September of 2019, students from the board gave presentations to freshman health classes at Burroughs explaining the board and its purpose, what resources are already provided at Burroughs, and answered questions about mental health. The day was a success and the students were happy to connect with younger Burroughs students throughout the day!
In the summer of 2019, students from the Burbank Student Mental Health Board (BMHB) bought a variety of therapeutic tools for the Burroughs CARE Center. After visiting an immersive therapeutic environment at CASA Pacifica, the board decided to utilize their funds to buy a variety of tools for students to express their emotions in a non-verbal way. Following much research, the board bought weighted blankets, a punching bag, fidget toys, aroma and sound therapy equipment, and many other items to be used at the CARE Center. Students must ask for these tools upon entering the center, but be sure to take advantage of them if you need to!
